An in-depth exploration of industry expectations at auditions for musical theatre. Students will have practical training in preparation and execution of songs used to secure work as an actor in a musical, including, but not limited to, performing memorized songs. The course includes detailed preparation for the process of finding auditions for musicals and compiling and submitting actor’s materials.

  1. Break down typical industry expectations for actors at musical theatre auditions.
    1. Establish the procedures utilized by the majority of casting professionals for musicals.
    2. Determine what musical theatre casting professionals deem standard for actor preparation details.
    3. Develop an ability to consistently arrive at audition settings with comprehensive preparation.
    4. Demonstrate exceptional etiquette for communicating with an accompanist.
  2. Distinguish effective attributes of songs from musicals in audition settings.
    1. Examine selected songs from effective lyricists and composers with focus on performance qualities in an audition setting.
    2. Characterize aspects of the song as either effective or ineffective within an audition setting.
    3. Compare potential songs in an actor’s own book in order to select effective contrasting material.
  3. Perform multiple songs that show an actor’s range with effective audition techniques.
