ARC 113 - Architectural Drafting I

This course focuses on fundamental drafting skills and how they are applied to the architectural drafting profession. The course presents current drafting standards and trends in the architectural industry. It emphasizes standardization and the necessary foundation of drafting training as well as implementation of a common approach to drafting.
Prerequisite: 1. Complete the ALEKS placement test with a minimum score of 30 or higher.
Corequisite:    with a C or better or Instructor Approval.
Competencies
  1. Utilize basic architectural tools and techniques.
    1. Identify the uses and differences between architectural and engineering scales.
    2. Describe architectural lettering/font characteristics.
    3. Enumerate on the purpose of construction documents and the importance and expectation of their legibility
    4. Employ and develop proper architectural drawing technique.
  2. Produce a vignette project of either of the following as an introduction to three-dimensional thinking.
    1. Measure and carefully use CAD to draw a Plan, Front and Side Elevations of the bench outside the South entrance to Building 3W within one class period using proper care and technique.
    2. Measure and carefully use CAD to draw a Plan, Front and a vertical Section of the entry curtain wall that is the South entrance to Building 3W within one class period using proper care and technique.
  3. Examine assigned building Floor Plans.
    1. Define “Plan” vs “Floor Plan” and identify plan guidelines.
    2. Distinguish between different types of Plan views.
    3. Identify sheet placement and appropriate scales for detail level required.
    4. Identify expectations and required standards.
  4. Illustrate assigned building Floor Plans.
    1. Produce a Main Floor Plan using proper construction techniques and architectural CAD standards.
    2. Annotate all Plans using required software tools and techniques.
    3. Label appropriately using class annotation standards.
  5. Discuss construction of a Roof Plan and Exterior Elevations.
    1. Define “Roof Plan” and identify its drawing standards.
    2. Discuss proper sheet placement and appropriate scale.
    3. Identify various roof elements: eaves, overhangs, rakes, hips, and gables.
  6. Illustrate the Roof Plan for your assigned building.
    1. Illustrate and annotate all ridge, hip, and valleys correctly.
    2. Locate and dimension overhang and rake depths.
    3. Illustrate and annotate all remaining roof elements.
    4. Label appropriately using class annotation standards.
  7. Discuss techniques for developing Elevation views.
    1. Define an “Elevation” view and identify the drawing standards.
    2. Recall line weight requirements.
    3. List pertinent heights for these Elevation views.
    4. Identify which views receive poché and which views do not.
  8. Develop exterior building Elevations.
    1. Demonstrate proper sheet placement and appropriate use of scale.
    2. Identify proper “Elevation” technique and standards.
    3. Delineate all four (Front, Left, Rear, and Right) Exterior Elevations using proper architectural CAD techniques and standards.
    4. Select and reproduce all pertinent pochés.
    5. Properly place all annotation to maintain legibility and class standards.
    6. Label appropriately using class annotation standards.
