PSY 291 - Prin. of Behavior Modification Credits: 3 Lecture Hours: 3 Lab Hours: 0 Practicum Hours: 0 Work Experience: 0 Course Type: General The principles of learning theory with a major emphasis on operant conditioning will be studied. Emphasis will be on the practical application of these principles to the areas of mental health, mental retardation and education. Competencies
- Distinguish key concepts, principles, and major perspectives in behaviorism and behavioral analysis.
- Describe the classical conditioning model, its concepts and theories, including basic terminology, key findings, and applications.
- Describe the operant conditioning model, its concepts and theories, including basic terminology, key findings, and applications.
- Use scientific reasoning to examine behavioral analysis phenomena.
- Describe major research methods used in behavioral analysis.
- Review studies of applied behavioral analysis.
- Give examples of behaviorism in psychological research.
- Apply behavioral analysis concepts and operations to human behavior in real-world events.
- Identify probable causes and maintenance of dysfunctional behavior from a behavioral perspective.
- Give examples to identify the antecedent stimuli, responses and consequences operative in everyday experiences.
- Apply behavioral analysis for a better understanding of self and the impact individuals have on others.
- Analyze the use of behavioral intervention programs and strategies in training, addiction cycles, and other therapies.
- Demonstrate an understanding of behavioral analysis assessment models and techniques.
- Explain techniques for replacing aversive control (i.e., punishment, negative reinforcement) with more positive alternatives.
- Discuss procedures for increasing appropriate low frequency behaviors and decreasing inappropriate high frequency behaviors, using principles of behavior modification.
- Discuss procedures for bringing responses under more functional stimulus control and for creating new responses, using principles of behavior modification.
- Explain the ethical responsibility of applied behavioral analysis programs and assessments.
- Discuss ethics and dilemmas in changing behavior.
- Discuss the challenges for the field of applied behavior analysis, careers, and training in behavior analysis.
- Develop competence in writing and/or verbal communication skills.
- State ideas in written formats that reflect behavioral concepts and principles.
- Construct questions about psychological content.
