This course explores selected concerns that women are likely to bring into a counseling situation. Topics include sex roles, gender and socialization, and their impact on women’s lives.
Competencies
  1. Demonstrate an understanding of the history of American feminism.
    1. Define the word feminist
    2. Explain the American Women’s rights movement and achievements of this movement
    3. Identify gender inequalities that still exist in America today.
  2. Critique different theoretical perspectives that influence feminism.
    1. Identify types of feminism: liberal, cultural, Marxist, Radical and Post Modern
    2. Explore different feminist theory and influences they have
    3. Compare and contrast theories.
  3. Evaluate Gender Stereotypes and Gender differences
    1. Explore gender role stereo types and attitudes
    2. Review gender differences regarding behavior
    3. Discuss impact of gender stereotyping and differences have on women
  4. Discuss differences of the female experience through-out her lifespan.

  5. Distinguish Women’s abilities, achievement and motivation
    1. Identify female contributions to education, work, and family.

    3. Explore women’s issues at work (i.e. pay inequity, male dominated fields, male structures, lack of women leaders, etc.)
  6. Explain biological influences, psychology, and health issues specific to Women
    1. Identify genetic makeup and sex hormones
    2. Identify health risks for women
    3. Identify health care discrimination and health needs specific to women
    4. Discuss social issues such as abortion, birth control, etc.
  7. Evaluate Female Sexuality
    1. Summarize common fallacies of female sexuality
    2. Explore psychological and physiological aspects of sexuality
    3. Review sexual disorders and therapies.
    4. Compare and contrast gender similarities and differences around sexual activity
  8. Describe mental health issues among women
    1. Identify mental health disorders that impact women along with the consequences and treatment of such disorders.
    2. Identify issues of substance abuse and the impact.
    3. Identify issues of abuse (sexual, physical and emotional) and the impact.
