ENG 235 - Playwriting and Screenwriting Credits: 3 Lecture Hours: 3 Lab Hours: 0 Practicum Hours: 0 Work Experience: 0 Course Type: General A course devoted to the advanced study and writing of stage-worthy plays and/or marketable screenplays emphasizing appropriate techniques of each dramatic form and an expanded understanding of contemporary practitioners. Competencies
- Understand and perform critical analysis of plays and screen-plays
- Identify and define advanced aspects of plays
- Demonstrate an understanding of how various dramatic techniques work
- Compose and revise plays/screen plays
- Write and submit two one-act plays/film shorts for class discussion
- Provide critical suggestions for revision of other class members’ submissions
- Use critical terminology in workshop discussions
- Revise the two plays substantially
- Submit the revised work to the instructor for evaluation
- Incorporate into written work the following elements
- Character defining actions, consistency and plausibility
- Thematic unity
- Visual and auditory elements which complement meaning
- Language: craft in dialogue
- Research
- Correctness in format
- Develop an awareness of local and contemporary playwrights and screen-writers
- Attend the performance of two local theatre/film productions
- Interact with production participants before and after performances
- Write and submit to the instructor critical responses to each performance
- Submit original work for possible production in various markets
- Research theatre and film magazines, contests, and other markets
- Match recently written and revised work to appropriate markets
- Correctly submit work to appropriate publications
