This hands-on course teaches how the pros plan, design, and produce complete websites using professional web authoring and site management software. Learn to use database- driven Open Source Content Management Systems such as WordPress as well as Dreamweaver, and other software.
Prerequisite: GRD 470  
Competencies
  1. Evaluate the advantages of non-database (CMS or Content Management Systems) software for delivery of web pages.
    1. Examine the advantages of designing the “look and feel” and then choosing non-CMS software for page layout and site management.
    2. Distinguish between popular non-CMS software systems, and the advantages of each.
    3. Develop strategies for updating non-CMS sites by clients.
  2. Appraise the advantages of CMS (Content Management Systems) for the delivery of web pages.
    1. Determine the organizational and cost advantages of designing the framework and functionality of a site before the “look and feel”.
    2. Discuss how a CMS facilitates the organization, control, and publication of content by users with different levels of access.
    3. Identify current open-source CMS systems (including blog software), and how they are implemented.
  3. Create Rich Media and video for webpages.                                                                        
    1. Explain the advantages of including Rich Media animations and video in web pages.
    2. Demonstrate the process of authoring Rich Media animation and video. 
  4. Generate CMS and blog template skins to customize the “look and feel” of pages.
    1. Examine the concept of site “skins” or “templates”, their use, and where to download them.
    2. Modify existing skin code with Dreamweaver and graphics with software to alter the colors, layout, and typography of a site.
    3. Develop HTML files that render accurately in major browsers and on all platforms. 
  5. Design a sophisticated project that includes Rich Media and video produced according to industry-standards.
    1. Apply a framework that supports the concept and design to be implemented.
    2. Produce Rich Media and video where appropriate to enhance web pages.
    3. Validate that all pages display properly on target browsers and operating systems.
  6. Evaluate responsible and professional computer techniques when creating websites.
    1. Apply creative thinking skills to design the user interface and graphics according to the need of the client.
    2. Produce quality projects within given timeframe by meeting established deadlines.
