Building Maintenance

The Building Maintenance certificate is a series of job-related courses that provide a person with an understanding of how to keep a commercial or industrial type of building operating efficiently and effectively. Skill training enables a maintenance specialist to do the job from the first day of employment.

  2. Satisfy the assessment requirement.
  3. Attend any required information/registration session.

Graduation Requirements


To earn a Building Maintenance certificate, complete all course work as prescribed and maintain a 2.0 grade point average.

What Kind of Work Will You Do?


  • Organize work schedule of jobs needing completion.
  • Maintain records of work completed.
  • Maintain and repair various mechanical components of a building, such as door and window hardware.
  • Carry out minor plumbing and electrical work for maintenance.
  • Operate and maintain the heating and cooling system.
  • Maintain the building for safety standards

What Skills and Abilities Will You Need?


  • Demonstrate mechanical ability through use of hand and power tools.
  • Visualize components and their relationship to each other.
  • Demonstrate organizational skills in planning the work schedules.
  • Demonstrate organizational skills and attention to detail in keeping records of work completed.
  • Be a self-starter and work with little supervision.

What Else Should I Consider about this Specialist Certificate?


  • Trained mechanical personnel can add to the profitability of a building by applying knowledge of energy conservation.
  • This program may be a stepping stone for additional or in-depth knowledge in any one area.
