DMACC’s comprehensive 2 year interior design degree will prepare you for a career in the interior design industry. You will study the most cutting-edge technology including Revit and the Adobe suite, while also learning to appreciate and execute hand-drafting and rendering. With an emphasis on both residential and commercial projects, this creative curriculum will educate you on all aspects of the industry. Your education will cover finishes and specifications, kitchen and bath design, lighting design, building codes and accessibility, while focusing on universal design, globalization and sustainable building practices. Study tour options around the Midwest will be available each semester and those in their final semester have the opportunity to apply to an international study tour program. Your education will prepare you with a comprehensive portfolio and on the job experience. You will graduate prepared to apply for any job in the industry and with the foundational knowledge required to take the National Council for Interior Design Qualification exam.

To earn an Interior Design, AAS, a student must complete all required coursework as prescribed and maintain a 2.0 grade point average. Total Credits Required to Complete this Award - 71

What Kind of Work Will You Do?

Design and decorate spaces that align with a client’s needs and aesthetics.

Design interior spaces for business offices, apartments, healthcare facilities, restaurants and schools.

Create visual displays in a retail environment.

Consult on lighting, props, costumes, and locations for theater, film, and television.

Select the visual elements used in brand merchandising for advertising.

Design lighting installations for residential and commercial spaces.

Design functional and compliant kitchens and bathrooms.

Advise on furniture and home decor product development.
What Skills and Abilities Will You Need?
Artistic talent and creativity Ability to conceptualize and effectively use design elements and principles. Plan spatial designs and determine how elements may coordinate with one another. Ability to create renderings and plans by hand and by computer. Utilize Computer Aided Design software.
Knowledge in construction, graphic design, architecture, safety and building regulations and codes. Strong verbal and written communication skills. Present your ideas, designs and proposals to prospective clients and supervisors. Teamwork, collaboration and the ability to take direction from supervisors, clients and peers to improve your work. Manage your time to meet deadlines while working on more than one project at a time and stay within project budget.
What Else Should I Consider about this Program or Career Choice?
- Must be able to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
Must learn multiple software programs and stay current with updates, adapt to change and be able to learn on your own. Requires high attention to detail.
