Accounting Payroll, Certificate

The Accounting Payroll certificate will provide you with in-depth training for filing federal and state payroll taxes. Upon completion you will have an understanding of payroll rules and regulations, pension plans, benefit plans, garnishments, and stock options.

The Accounting Payroll certificate will also prepare students for the Fundamental Payroll Certification exam administered by the American Payroll Association. This certification provides external verification of payroll skills and knowledge.

Location: Ankeny, Online and Urban


Students may start any semester.


Graduation Requirements


To earn an Accounting Payroll Certificate, a student must complete all coursework as prescribed, maintain a 2.0 grade point average and receive a grade of “C” or higher in all ACC coursework.

These credits are applicable to the AAS degree in Accounting Specialist  and the Accounting and Bookkeeping diploma .

Program Competencies


  1. Demonstrate the basic workplace skills of listening, writing, computing, problem-solving, interpersonal relationships and leadership.
  2. Demonstrate double-entry accounting for payroll transactions.
  3. Compile financial reports for corporations, manufacturing and branch operations.
  4. Demonstrate the personal qualities needed to succeed as a payroll accountant.
  5. Generate computerized financial and managerial reports (Excel).
  6. Develop individual career values.
  7. Explore opportunities in the payroll profession.
  8. Produce personnel and payroll records in conformance with current legal requirements.
  9. Solve problems using a computer/keyboard/calculator.
  10. Solve problems on a 10-key.
