In this certificate course series, students will be introduced to the world of data science and, upon completion, will be prepared to apply their new skills in the business world. Students will get the opportunity to work with many different data analysis techniques including regression and machine learning concepts.

This certificate is intended to be completed in three semesters and will provide the skills needed for entry level Data Science positions.

Program Graduation Requirements

To earn a Data Science Certificate, a student must complete all required coursework as prescribed and maintain a 2.0 grade point average.

What Kind of Work Will You Do?

The data science work life can be incredibly varied depending on the company. A data scientist is expected to find valuable information about sets of data so the company can get value from this information. A data scientist is also expected to communicate to multiple different groups of varied technical expertise from developers and engineers to marketers and executives.

What Skills and Abilities Will You Need?

The most important skill of a data scientist is curiosity. Wanting to find the valuable information from often large sets of data needs to be motivating. A data scientist also needs to be a confident communicator. They need to be able to communicate will with technical groups to get the assistance they need in accessing data. They also need to be able to communicate well with business groups to gather requirements as well as defend the answers they find. Finally, a data scientist needs to be able to control work load because a good data scientist is always in demand.

What Else Should I Consider about this Program or Career Choice?

This certificate is a great jumping off point in the world of data science but this career is one of life-long learning. According to the Department of Labor Statistics, www.bls.gov, as of 2019, the median annual wage for a statistician is $95,680 annually. Statisticians with data science specific skill sets can most likely exceed this median wage

Program Competencies

Demonstrate understanding of basic concepts of Python development.
Employ understanding of Python concepts to apply to more advanced topics.
Examine the basics of data science concepts including data analysis, data reporting, and expectations of a data scientist career.
Experiment with data acquisition, data cleansing, data analysis, data visualization, and simple modeling.
Analyze datasets through different machine learning techniques.
Demonstrate understanding of statistics concepts to be utilized for data analysis.
