Video Production, Certificate

The Video Production certificate is designed for individuals with no prior video production experience, who wish to gain a basic understanding of video and software skills used in the video production industry.

The courses in this certificate are the building blocks needed to provide a solid foundation, preparing a student to enter the world of video production.

Graduation Requirements


To earn a Video Production certificate, a student must complete all required coursework as prescribed and maintain a 2.0 grade point average.

Program Competencies


  1. Describe camera equipment and accessories used for video production assignments, including batteries, memory devices, file types, and lenses.
  2. Demonstrate the appropriate use of the camera controls on various video and DSLR digital cameras.
  3. Demonstrate different uses of camera including movement, depth of field and settings (including ISO, F-stop, and zoom).
  4. Demonstrate the camera principles of rule-of-thirds, composition, backgrounds and setting a mood.
  5. Describe various types of lighting instruments and their proper use in different production situations, including safety, positioning, and power requirements.
  6. Describe various qualities of light and be able to recognize, produce, and control various lighting conditions including diffused, direct, bounced, key, fill, various color temperatures and backlight.
  7. Describe various types of audio recording equipment including microphones, digital mixers, and recorders - both wired and wireless
  8. Demonstrate proper audio recording techniques using various audio equipment to acquire clean dialogue and natural sounds on set, outside and on location.
  9. Demonstrate recording in a sound studio using proper microphones, placement and recording software, and techniques.
  10. Demonstrate Voice Over recording in a sound booth
  11. Demonstrate recording ADR and Foley sound.
  12. Demonstrate creating a sound design for video productions using dialogue, ADR, sound effects, music using Adobe Audition CC software.
  13. Describe how to create a message and develop an outline and script from that message.
  14. Demonstrate how to work with clients to develop video projects that meet the client’s goals.
  15. Describe how to communicate and persuade clients to make an effective video for them.
  16. Describe the pre-production steps and process to prepare for production and post-production.
  17. Demonstrate and apply the multi-step process of “workflow” while working on video production assignments, including set etiquette.
  18. Describe non-linear Adobe Premiere Pro CC editing software and how to import, edit, transition and add effects to the video and audio files.
  19. Demonstrate proper non-linear editing techniques to achieve maximum storytelling and messaging impact.
