Fitness and Sports Management, Health Concentration, AS

Fitness and Sports Management is designed to give students three different areas to choose from: Fitness Management, Sports Management and Health.

This degree is designed to be a two-year degree. The degree is designed for individuals who would like to pursue a career in the fitness, sports, recreation or health fields.

The Fitness and Sports Management AS degree is a transfer degree, designed to prepare students for a Fitness Management, Sports Management and Health program at a four-year school. Graduates from the program may also be able to find entry-level positions at parks and recreation departments, YMCA/YWCAs, private health clubs, golf courses, schools, hospitals or other facility management positions.

Program Entry Requirements


  1. Complete an application for admission.
  2. Satisfy the assessment requirement. 
  3. Attend any required information/registration session.
  4. A program orientation will be required for all students entering the program.

Graduation Requirements


To earn a Fitness and Sports Management AS degree, a student must complete all coursework as prescribed and maintain a 2.0 grade point average.

To complete this program, you must meet the Diversity Requirement with a grade of “C” or higher. See the AS  section of this catalog for more information about which courses can count toward this requirement.

What Kind of Work Will You Do?


  • Use and instruct people on the proper use of various types of physical fitness/exercise equipment.
  • Inform people on the physiological functions of the body in fitness training.
  • Determine the fitness level people should work at and develop an appropriate fitness program.
  • Evaluate and maintain records of fitness progress.
  • Direct the operation of a fitness/wellness center/recreation department.
  • Budget facility needs

  • Operate and maintain fitness/exercise equipment.
  • Demonstrate proper techniques on various types of fitness/exercise equipment.
  • Must have the necessary physical abilities to perform demonstrations.
  • Apply knowledge of physiological principles.
  • Build confidence in those with doubt or difficulty associated with exercise.
  • Be able to identify individual fitness/exercise needs.
  • Organization skills for performance of fitness activities.
  • Communication skills for diverse types of personalities.
  • Organize sports tournaments.

  2. Lead recreation & fitness activities for all ages
  3. Assess individual recreation & fitness skills and need for all ages
  4. Prepare and submit verbal and written reports
  5. Work with budgeting to include the purchasing and maintenance of supplies and equipment
  6. Organize and supervise staff
  7. Teach and demonstrate any recreation & fitness activities
  8. Organize, develop and conduct recreation & fitness programs
  9. Demonstrate empathy and understanding while teaching a game or activity
  10. Mediate and problem solve difficult situation as they arise
