This introductory course develops critical AI literacy for students across liberal arts and career and technical programs. It explores what AI and generative AI are, how the technology works, and which everyday tools use it as well as the ethics of AI development and application. To experiment with text and image generators, students will craft effective prompts with close attention to purpose, audience, and context and evaluate AI-generated output for accuracy, relevance, and bias. The end goal of the course is transparent and responsible AI use that supports learning, creativity, and future professional success.
Competencies
  1. Demonstrate foundational understanding of AI technologies and examine their ethical and societal implications
    1. Describe and distinguish between AI and generative AI and explain basic AI principles such as machine learning, natural language processing, and large language models
    2. Analyze the ethical problems posed by the development and application of AI, including academic integrity, environmental impact, the effect on labor, misinformation and deepfakes, intellectual property, and privacy 
  2. Develop critical AI literacy to assess appropriate and inappropriate uses of AI across academic and professional settings
    1. Decide when AI should and should not be used to further learning, creativity, and professional goals
    2. Identify AI applications in prospective professional fields and develop work-appropriate AI skills
  3.  Use AI effectively and responsibly through iterative prompting, critical evaluation, and revision
    1. Compose effective prompts with attention to purpose, audience, and context
    2. Evaluate AI-generated output for accuracy, relevance, and bias and revise through iteration
