The course prepares students for the state-administered Hazardous Materials Operations and Awareness certification exam. It discusses the properties of chemically active substances related to hazardous materials, and the course identifies and demonstrates techniques, methods, and strategies to mitigate hazardous material (Haz-mat) incidents. Material covers state and federal laws as they relate to the management of hazardous materials.
Prerequisite: FIR 101 and FIR 127
Competencies

Analyze hazardous materials incidents to determine the scope of the problem and potential outcomes
Implement defensive and offensive response actions with appropriate planning and within the capabilities of available personnel and resources
Identify hazardous materials containers, types, properties, and behaviors using detection/monitoring equipment
Select appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) for proper use in performing decontamination operations
Perform product control techniques such as absorption, adsorption, damming, diking, diversion, retention, vapor dispersion, and vapor suppression.
Initiate the proper implementation of the Incident Command System (ICS) according to the National Incident Management System (NIMS)
Identify sources of hazardous materials information, collecting hazard information and communicating with relevant representatives
Apply relevant codes, standards, and regulations (e.g., OSHA, EPA, DOT) to prevent incidents and mitigate threats
