AGV 231 - Intro. to Clinical Pathology Credits: 2 Lecture Hours: 1 Lab Hours: 2 Practicum Hours: 0 Work Experience: 0 Course Type: Voc/Tech This course is an introduction to clinical pathologic laboratory methods and various sample collection, procedures, and interpretation for common diagnostic testing performed in the veterinary laboratory. Prerequisite: Acceptance into the DMACC Veterinary Assistant or Technician Program. Competencies
- Execute the processing of animal blood, urine, and stool in a veterinary laboratory
- Establish appropriate procedure for collecting samples in a veterinary laboratory
- Process samples utilizing current technologies and safety procedures
- Dispose of samples according to established procedures and current laws
- Demonstrate proper log and record keeping in the laboratory
- Demonstrate voided-urine handling
- Perform a urine dipstick test
- Use a refractometer to obtain USG measurement
- Demonstrate pH analysis on a urine sample
- Demonstrate fecal-analysis techniques
- Summarize basic laboratory organization and best practices for safety and sample preservation
- Identify common blood tubes and preservatives used in veterinary medicine
- Demonstrate preparation of microhematocrit tubes for evaluation
- Prepare fecal flotation solutions
- Discuss specimen staining techniques
- Show proper use of Personal Protection Equipment appropriate to the laboratory environment
- Classify common external parasites and perform diagnostic tests
- Identify common external parasites associated with domestic species
- Review life cycles of external parasites for owners
- Discuss zoonotic external parasites
- Employ proper compound light microscope maintenance and operation
