MAP 551 - Health & Disease:Human Body II Credits: 3 Lecture Hours: 3 Lab Hours: 0 Practicum Hours: 0 Work Experience: 0 Course Type: Voc/Tech Students will incorporate critical thinking skills based on knowledge of course competencies to identify human anatomy and physiology, including the interrelationship of organ systems. The course will address common pathology, etiology, diagnostic aids, and treatment options and prognosis including pharmacology related to each body system. Students will study the interaction that occurs between body systems and changes to the structure and function that occur across the life span. Wellness and prevention will be reviewed with each unit, along with medical terminology, definitions, and pronunciations with key terms for each unit of study. Units studied will include respiratory, digestive, nutrition, dietary needs of special populations, nervous, sensory, endocrine, urinary, reproductive, common childhood diseases, and nutrition. Prerequisite: MAP 550 with Grade of C or better Competencies

- Identify body systems
- List major organs in each body system discussed
- Define medical terms and abbreviations related to all body systems
- Identify medical terms related to the human body by labeling the word parts
- Compare body structure and function of the human body across the life span
- List physical changes that occur in the human body with age
- State the impact age has on body function
- Describe the normal function of each body system discussed
- Define homeostasis as it applies to human body systems
- Identify indications of abnormal body functions
- Identify common pathology related to each body system discussed
- Analyze pathology for each body system including diagnostic measures and treatment modalities
- State the prognosis for common pathology of body systems discussed
- Identify the classifications of medications
- State indications for usage of common medications
- List desired effects, side effects, and adverse reactions of common medications
- Apply concepts of nutrition as it relates to patient needs
- Instruct a patient according to the patient’s special dietary needs
- Show awareness of a patient’s concerns regarding a dietary change
- Coach patients regarding health maintenance
