ELT 147 - NEC Residential

The basic principles of the NEC for layout and construction for residential wiring systems. Apply code rules to house wiring installations. Discuss security systems, fire and smoke detectors, low-voltage and remote controls.

    1. Identify electrical hazard categories of electric shock, electrocution, fires, and explosions

  2. Analyze how to navigate the NEC
    1. Illustrate the structure and layout of the NEC

    1. Explain the electrical outlet symbols used in plans for residential applications
    2. Discuss the types of outlets, boxes, fixtures, and switches used
    3. Explain the methods of mounting various electrical devices
    4. Recognize how to position boxes, receptacles, to the different types of wall surfaces

  4. Assess wiring methods
    1. Define conductor sizes and types, wire connections, voltage drops and calculate neutral sizing for services
    2. Define the terms associated with rating conductors, sizing wires, and flexible cords
    3. Identify overcurrent protection for branch circuits
    4. Explain aluminum conductors and possible fire hazards associated with them
    5. Distinguish the code rules for residential cables and raceways
    6. Describe multi-wire circuits
    7. Illustrate the sizing of neutral conductors
    8. Examine the markings of terminals of wiring devices and connectors
    9. Identify ground fault circuit interrupters, arc fault circuit interrupters, and transient voltage surge suppressors requirements
    10. Estimate a connected load from a room based on the number of fixtures and outlets included in the circuit supplying the room
  5. Justify the selection and location of electrical boxes and circuits
    1. Draw a cable layout and a wiring diagram based on information given on residence plans, the speculations, and code requirements
    2. Calculate correct electrical box sizes for various applications, required by the NEC
  6. Evaluate residential lighting circuits in habitable rooms for living and sleeping, and related spaces
    1. Express requirements for installation of luminaires in clothes closets
    2. Explain code requirements for installing ceiling fans
    3. Determine the connections for three-way switches
  7. Evaluate residential receptacle circuits in habitable rooms for living and sleeping, and related spaces
    1. Explain the factors that influence the grouping of outlets into circuits
    2. Estimate loads for the outlets of a circuit
    3. Explain code requirements for receptacles outlets in hallway installations
    4. Describe split receptacle circuits and their applications
  8. Interpret NEC requirements for receptacle outlets and lighting circuits for kitchens, laundry bathrooms, garages, and outdoor installations
    1. Illustrate code requirements for receptacles and GFCI’s installed in kitchens, laundry bathrooms, garages, and outdoor installations
    2. Describe the proper wiring and grounding connections for large appliances, based on type of wiring methods
