- Recognize common NEMA symbols for relays, contactors, motor starters, pushbuttons, pilot lights, switches, and motors.
- Describe the function of NEMA-standard components in motor control systems
- Identify and label NEMA symbols on schematics and ladder diagrams
- Explain NEMA ratings for enclosures
- Differentiate alternative symbol conventions: IEC vs. NEMA
- Analyze power distribution systems and fundamentals
- Describe Switchboards, Panelboards, M.C. Centers, and Motor Control Panels
- Describe transformers and magnetic induction in AC systems
- Identify Delta and Wye transformer connections
- Illustrate DC power supply fundamentals
- Differentiate motor power circuits and control circuits
- Explain the load requirements for motor power circuits and control circuits
- Recognize overcurrent protection and circuit load sizing requirements for motor power circuits and control circuits
- Evaluate AC and DC motor types and operation
- Describe Single phase and three phase AC Motors fundamentals
- Identify Delta and Wye motor connections
- Describe how a motor’s rotary magnetic field is developed
- Describe shunt, series, and compound wound DC motors
- Explain shaded pole motors
- Assess motor control applications with aid of schematics and ladder/line diagrams
- Differentiate standard schematics, pictorial diagrams, and ladder diagrams
- Illustrate symbols, descriptions, and notation used for ladder diagrams
- Interpret the three basic sections of a ladder diagram
- Explain relay logic (AND/OR/NAND/NOR/NOT) circuits
- Compare two- and three-wire control circuits
- Explain manual motor control
- Distinguish electromechanical controls: coils, relays, contactors, and motor starters
- Describe memory/latching circuits
- Examine interlocking, sequencing, and timers in motor controls
- Describe arch suppression and shading coils
- Compare reduced current starting with Variable Frequency Drives, Soft starters, and DC Controllers.
- Explain methods for forward and reverse operation of three phase, single phase, and DC motors.
- Analyze practical lab exercises from schematics and ladder diagrams
- Construct two- and three-wire circuits.
- Employ relays and contactors in motor control circuits
- Demonstrate push button wiring in electromechanical controls
- Assemble circuits with pilot lights
- Design timing controls in motor control circuits
- Demonstrate the circuitry necessary for fwd-rev control of a 3 phase motor
- Troubleshoot lab results to identify wiring errors or component malfunctions
- Describe corrective actions to ensure circuits operate properly and safely
