A survey of exceptional learners in the classroom. History, philosophy, current issues, trends and mainstreaming will be discussed.
Competencies
 

  1. Contrast the history of laws and services provided for students with disabilities/giftedness with current practices and perspectives
    1. Compare early laws and current laws related to serving students with disabilities/giftedness. Share how these laws impacted the services provided for these individuals. Topics covered must include but are not limited to: PL 94-142, ADA, IDEA, PL113- 112, Deinstitutionalization and Institutionalization
    2. Explain current societal perspectives on students with disabilities/giftedness and how it impacts the service of students with disabilities/giftedness in school and communities
  2. Describe the causes and characteristics of students with disabilities/giftedness
    1. Define causes of various disabilities throughout both educational and clinical settings
    2. Discuss common characteristics related to students with disabilities or giftedness and explain educational considerations used to meet unique needs
  3. Demonstrate your knowledge of current terms and classification for serving students with disabilities/giftedness
    1. List terminology used for identifying/classifying exceptional learners
    2. Explain how services/placement is determined based on the student’s specific needs and considering the Least Restrictive Environment (LRE)
  4. Explain the assessments/identification strategies and tools used when determining/developing program and individual service plans
    1. Describe the use of the Multi-tiered Systems of Support and Response to Intervention (RTI) related to determining eligibility for services and the development of individual program/plan needs
    2. Outline the Child Find Disability Process required by all schools to determine special education eligibility
    3. Define and discuss the Individual Family Service Plan (IFSP), Individual Education Plan (IEP), and 504 plan and the role each plan has in serving students with disabilities
    4. Outline the role of the following team members as related to identifying, developing and implementing academic and behavior plans for students (general education teacher, special education teacher, administrator, paraeducator, other essential partners)
  5. Analyze strategies used for effective instruction and management of students with disabilities/giftedness
    1. Summarize strategies used to teach/support academic, behavioral and social emotional skills of students
    2. Explain the importance of collecting, interpreting, and using student performance data for the development and delivery of individual plans
    3. Identify evidence based instructional strategies and classroom management techniques that create a supportive learning environment for struggling and/or at-risk students, culturally and linguistically diverse students, gifted students
    4. Recognize the importance of collaboration between all individuals responsible for the academic and behavioral supports provided to students with disabilities and/or gifted
  6. Evaluate the transition services related to Learning, Living and Working for students with disabilities and giftedness
    1. Discuss the appropriate life skill instruction for students of various levels of need
    2. Identify community services of support available for students with disabilities and their families
    3. Compare post-secondary options available/appropriate for students with disabilities/giftedness
