This course covers the management, husbandry, restraint, and behavior of common livestock. This course includes biosecurity and jurisprudence of veterinary care in these species.
Prerequisite: Acceptance to the DMACC Veterinary Assisting or Technology Programs.
Competencies
  1. Demonstrate knowledge of basic large animal care
    1. Recognize common breeds of equine, bovine, ovine, and swine
    2. List permanent ID methods used for large animals
  2. Understand biosecurity concepts surrounding livestock care and holding
    1. Implement sanitation procedures for animal holding and housing areas
    2. Summarize jurisprudence surrounding production animal medicine
  3. Differentiate domestic animal species and species-specific behavior
    1. Recognize the differences in large animal species
    2. Identify the behaviors associated with each species
    3. Enumerate the specific needs of each species for appropriate care
  4. Compare and contrast basic large animal restraint techniques
    1. Perform halter, tie, and lead technique with horses and cattle
    2. Demonstrate application of bovine restraint techniques
    3. Discuss swine restraint techniques
