ENG 235 - Playwriting and Screenwriting

This course provides introductory understanding and experience to the craft of playwriting and screenwriting. Students will focus on the fundamentals of dramatic writing including structure, creating characters, writing dialogue, and establishing theme. Coursework includes in class writing and discussion, writing assignments, and the reading of dramatic literature. Attendance at a theatrical performance or new film encouraged.

    1. Examine scripts with traditional dramatic structure
    2. Break down the effective structural qualities of traditional scripts
    3. Compare non-traditional or stylized plots to traditional ones
    4. Determine potential benefits and drawbacks to non-traditional plots as they effect productions
  2. Evaluate dramatic writing elements within a script, or scripts
    1. Examine each foundational dramatic writing element within a given script
    2. Justify why certain fundamental scriptwriting elements deploy greater value in production
  3. Compose a script, or scripts
    1. Produce examples of effective dialogue
    2. Generate scenes that effectively integrate with plot
    3. Create fully realized characters who actively pursue objectives
    4. Integrate thematic value
  4. Assess the effectiveness of work submitted in class
    1. Critique the potential of any self-written outlines, samples, and scripts in regard to selection or adoption
    2. Show a consistent use of objective and considerate criticism of colleague’s writing
    3. Develop an ability to constructively receive feedback
  5. Revise one’s own work for the purpose of substantial development
    1. Estimate audience reactions to one’s current draft
    2. Determine benefits of editing or expanding one’s current draft
    3. Compose multiple drafts of dramatic work
  6. Evaluate successful contemporaries, and their practices, in professional markets
    1. Point out dramatic writing tendencies that are widely represented in scripts which are receiving productions
    2. Interpret what skills and habits support effective scriptwriting
    3. Distinguish scriptwriting trends in various markets
