Study of several management and planning theories and practices used to assess client needs, establish goals, identify resources and make appropriate referrals. Community resources are explored. Only offered Fall and Spring semesters.
Prerequisite: HSV 109 , HSV 130  
Competencies
 

  1. Identify many of the agencies that provide services in the Human Services field.
    1. Identify services provided by various agencies. In particular DHS, SSA, VA, HUD, Mental Health, Intellectual Disabilities, and Substance Abuse.
    2. Identify eligibility requirements of clients.
    3. Identify client referral processes.
  2. Perform an assessment of client needs.
    1. Gather relevant data.
    2. Identify needs, citing facts that indicate the need.
    3. Select appropriate agencies that provide services that could meet the client needs.
    4. Write human services assessments that could be used to refer clients for services.
  3. Identify and integrate use of industry Code of Ethics.
    1. Explore personal values in relation to helping others.
    2. In small groups process ethical dilemmas identifying codes of ethics that are in question.
    3. Discuss professional boundaries providing examples of scenarios that students work through.
    4. Continue to use a variety of codes such as the NASW Code of Ethics as the framework for decision making.
  4. Develop a professional resume
    1. Review different styles of resumes such as functional and chronological.
    2. Review common interview questions and possible answers.
    3. Complete a resume
  5. Participate in a mock interview.
    1. Review common interview questions and possible answers.
    2. Pair up with peers and conduct mock interviews.
  6. Practice motivational interviewing and understand the premise.
    1. Review Stages of Change (Prochaska and DiClemente).
    2. Review foundation of Motivational Interviewing.
    3. Role play Motivational Interviewing techniques with peers.
  7.  Identify the signs and symptoms of suicide and prevention efforts.
    1. Review the symptoms of depression and prevalence.
    2. Review warning signs of suicide.
    3. Review techniques for coping with a suicidal client.
  8. Practice strengths perspective/solution focused therapy and understand the premise.
    1. Review the foundation of strengths perspective.
    2. Practice identifying strengths within a client.
    3. Review the foundation of solution focused therapy.
    4. Practice solution-focused techniques such as “miracle question”.
  9.  Examine self-care strategies
    1. Identify symptoms of burn-out.
    2. Identify self-care techniques to prevent burn-out.
    3. Complete a self-evaluation reflection paper.
  10. Demonstrate knowledge of cultural competence.
    1. Review the importance of cultural competence in assessment.
    2. Review the importance of cultural competence in documentation.
    3. Complete Diversity Assignment of immersion into another culture.
  11. Demonstrate knowledge of appropriate documentation skills.
    1. Utilize professional language in documentation.
    2. Document in third person.
    3. Document objective information.
    4. Review different styles of documentation such as SOAP notes, etc.
    5. Practice documentation through exams.
  12. Assess the working environment of human services agencies by visiting agencies in the community.
    1. Produce research questions.
    2. Examine human service agencies of interest.
    3. Identify the roles, responsibilities and relative power of human services professionals and middle level workers at those agencies.
    4. Report learning in writing and in oral reports to the class.
