ES4080 - Classroom Use of Streaming Videos from Personal Accounts

Procedure

Section: EDUCATIONAL SERVICES PROCEDURES

SubSection: INSTRUCTIONAL ADMINISTRATION

Master List Section: Student Services

  1. Institutional Regulation

    Classroom use of streaming videos via individual, personal accounts of instructors, staff, or students from vendors such as, but not limited to, Hulu, Netflix and Amazon, may require written permission from the vendor. Specific terms of use in place between the user and vendor may not specifically address classroom use and as such, streaming of a video from the vendor may be in violation of that agreement. The terms of use agreement will be considered prior to any considered use under Copyright.

  2. Procedure

    Faculty/staff wanting to use a video via a personal account from Netflix, Amazon, or similar vendor, must read the terms of service/use provided from the vendor. If classroom or public performance use is not explicitly allowed in the user agreement, and the instructor wants to show the video, the instructor has two options:
    1. Contact the vendor requesting written permission to use the streaming video in the classroom;
    2. Use a purchased/licensed copy (vhs, dvd, streaming) of the video in the classroom (contact DMACC Libraries for possible options).

(Under Copyright, online classes are only allowed to use “limited and reasonable” portions of a video unless you have permission, from the copyright holder, to show the film in its entirety. Please see https://go.dmacc.edu/copyright/Pages/onlineteaching.aspx for more information on copyright in the online environment.)
