DRA 223 - Performing Musical Theatre Credits: 3 Lecture Hours: 3 Lab Hours: 0 Practicum Hours: 0 Work Experience: 0 Course Type: General Training in the craft of dynamic, contemporary acting within the context of stories told with music, lyrics, and heightened dialogue and movement. The course includes exercises, analysis, and memorized musical theatre performances of scenes and songs. Attendance at a theatrical performance may be required. Prerequisite: DRA 130 Competencies
- Classify various styles of musical theatre performance within the canon of musical theatre.
- Discuss effective past musical theatre performances.
- Demonstrate an ability to effectively differentiate musical theatre performance styles.
- Examine how fundamental acting skills apply to musical theatre performance.
- Characterize terminology used in effective, fundamental acting on stage
- Apply effective fundamental acting terminology to musical theatre plays.
- Break down moments of heightened storytelling within musical theatre.
- Determine how lyrics that a character sings can most effectively forward a story.
- Illustrate how character driven rhythmic movement to music can effectively forward a story.
- Interpret a character as written in the context of a musical theatre play.
- Decide what analysis and scoring is strongest in support of clear and effective storytelling.
- Assess how effective the analysis is and how well it was implemented.
- Incorporate the ability to forward a story while singing into a dynamic acting performance.
- Perform lyrics with accompaniment effectively for musical theatre.
- Demonstrate an ability to continue the use of fundamental acting techniques while singing.
- Generate an ability to forward a story while dancing as part of a dynamic acting performance.
- Perform choreography to accompaniment effectively for musical theatre.
- Integrate fundamental acting technique while dancing.
- Create one or more performances of memorized scenes and/or solo pieces.
- Perform each memorized musical theatre scene more than once with truthful behavior in relation to the given circumstances of each performance.
- Apply character analysis and scoring from the script.
