MMS 485 - Video Production IV

During this course, through demonstrations, exercises and projects, students will learn advanced camera operation and techniques, including use of different cameras and lenses, along with advanced lighting techniques and styles in order to achieve different moods and styles.
Prerequisite OR Corequisite: MMS 482

    1. List the duties of a Cinematographer/Videographer
    2. Explain how to interpret a Director’s wishes and notes
    3. Explain how to use images to communicate your message and different emotions
    4. Explain how to design a look and feel for each video project
    5. Demonstrate rules of composition
    6. Demonstrate types of shots and how to select them for the most effective story telling
    7. Demonstrate how to select the right tools (cameras and lights) to achieve the desired look and feel
    8. Explain how to conduct a Tech Scout for camera and lighting

  2. Demonstrate advanced camera operation
    1. Review the different components of a video camera
    2. Review ISO, f-stop, shutter speed, exposure and how they all work together and affect the video image
    3. Demonstrate and apply how to select the best settings in different situations to achieve the look and feel intended
    4. Explain and apply use of different exposures for differing results
  3.  Analyze advanced lens selection and use
    1. Demonstrate use of different lenses for different results with fixed and zoom lenses
    2. Analyze properties of lenses including lens speed, distortion, focal length
    3. Explain how to select the correct lens for the intended shot
    4. Apply altering field of depth with camera setting and lighting
    5. Apply use of depth of field and rack focus
  4. Demonstrate advanced camera movement techniques
    1. Explain what motivates a moving shot
    2. Explain and practice camera movement using tripods and handheld rigs
    3. Explain and practice different camera movement using dollies, stabilizers, jib arms and other movement techniques
    4. Demonstrate and practice combining camera movement to create different visual results
    5. Demonstrate and practice shooting effective b-roll
  5. Evaluate advanced lighting techniques
    1. Explain and discuss safety issues as they relate to electricity and hot lights
    2. Review different lighting instruments and how to use them
    3. Explain how light is used to tell the story and set a mood
    4. Apply lighting to create different moods for comedy, drama, horror, commercials and corporate videos
    5. Practice different techniques to light a face for different results
    6. Create various lighting setups to achieve different looks
    7. Practice the use of hard light vs. soft light
    8. Practice different background lighting techniques
    9. Practice use of natural light indoors and outside
    10. Practice the use of negative fill
    11. Analyze better ways to incorporate available lighting in houses, businesses and outdoors into the lighting plan, including “practical” lighting
    12. Practice solutions to lighting with time restraints
  6. Demonstrate the use of color in lighting
    1. Explain the meaning of colors
    2. Explain and apply how color is interpreted in storytelling
    3. Demonstrate and practice how to change colors (and color temperatures) to evoke an emotion and mood
  7. Analyze length of takes
    1. Demonstrate and apply how to achieve a long, continuous take
    2. Demonstrate and practice how to create a fictional time vs. real time
    3. Discuss movies and TV show to determine how length of takes effectively told the story
    4. Explain and discuss pacing and rhythm in shooting styles
  8. Evaluate videotaping action and fight sequences
    1. Describe and plan an action/fight sequence
    2. Create a shot list for action/fight sequence
    3. Create a storyboard for an action/fight sequence
    4. Practice the different camera movements used in an action/fight sequence
