ECE 114 - Dual Language Learners in ECE

Evidence-based evaluation and instructional practices with young dual language learners. Focuses on the language, reading, writing, and communication development of children who are dual language learners (DLLs). Understanding of bilingual development and incorporation of strategies for bilingual development into instructional planning. Reviews assessment and instruction that promotes early language and literacy learning. Developing collaborative and culturally responsive relationships with families who speak languages other than English to support language and literacy learning.  This course includes field assignments.
Prerequisite: 12 credits in ECE or instructor permission.  Completed criminal history, including background and fingerprinting check.

4. Demonstrate the incorporation of children’s and families life experiences into instructional planning

3. Evaluate effective lessons, teaching strategies and play-based instructional experiences designed to facilitate English and continuous home language and literacy development. 

1. Review research and theory of early language and literacy acquisition of children who are dual language learners.

2. Apply evidence-based research, resources and practices to facilitate the oral and written language development of children who are dual language learners.

3. Differentiate strategies to promote language and literacy skills in English and children’s home language.

4. Create language rich environments to promote English and continuous home language learning.

4. Analyze issues in the assessment of English language learners 

1. Review effect of current demographics on assessment and teaching practices

2. Explain methods for gathering information from all families

3. Review the criteria for appropriate assessment

4. Illustrate how to use information from assessments to address each child’s home and secondary language needs.

5. Evaluate options for engaging families of dual language learners 

1. Identify appropriate community resources for supporting dual language families

2. Describe methods for incorporating cultural competence in relationships with families

3. Examine options for assisting families to use their home languages to help their children learn to listen, speak, read and write in their home language and English.
