RDG 039 - College Preparatory Reading II Credits: 3 Lecture Hours: 3 Lab Hours: 0 Practicum Hours: 0 Work Experience: 0 Course Type: Coll Prep The second in a series of courses designed to help students succeed with college-level reading assignments. Emphasis is on strengthening vocabulary and comprehension skills including annotating, summarizing, making inferences and reading critically. College preparatory courses cannot be used to fulfill degree requirements. Prerequisite: RDG 038 with a C or better or ACCUPLACER Next Gen Reading score of 230-247. Competencies
- Apply various techniques to expand vocabulary
- Identify various types of clues to word meaning
- Locate structural and context clues to establish the meaning of unknown words
- Review the use of print and online dictionaries
- Point out the main idea/thesis statement in various reading selections
- Distinguish topics from main ideas/thesis statements
- Locate stated main ideas
- Construct implied main ideas
- Examine details in various reading selections
- Classify major and minor details
- Summarize a variety of selections
- Apply various traditional and graphic note-taking strategies to demonstrate relationships among topics, main ideas and supporting details
- Classify different patterns of organization in assigned readings
- Apply textbook study techniques to assigned readings
- Identify the steps in the SQ4R or other study process
- Apply the SQ4R or other study process to various selections
- Demonstrate inferential reasoning in assigned selections
- Classify literal and figurative statements
- Describe the author’s tone and purpose

- Develop an understanding of differences in language use and meaning
- Relate critical analysis skills to assigned reading selections
