MFG 411 - Progressive Die Design Credits: 3 Lecture Hours: 1 Lab Hours: 4 Practicum Hours: 0 Work Experience: 0 Course Type: Voc/Tech Hands-on experience in the design, drawing and detailing of a progressive die using computer-aided design (CAD). Prerequisite: CAD 184 . Corequisite: MFG 412 Competencies
- Create a progressive die piece part design using CAD
- Create a piece part drawing applying appropriate criteria (minimum criteria: bending and/or forming, piercing, blanking and/or chopping and/or parting).
- Determine appropriate dimensions and tolerances for the piece part print to reflect application of final product
- Create flat blank lay-out
- Calculate bend allowance for each bend area
- Develop a flat blank lay-out of the piece part as it would appear in an unfolded state
- Apply dimensions to the flattened part
- Develop a stock strip lay-out
- Determine minimum stock material usage using CAD software
- Determine progressive order of pierce, form, coin, part, and trimming material
- Certify stock strip processing with piece part tolerances
- Formulate a die design
- Determine part ejection
- Develop a master timing sketch
- Create a die section layout using a stock strip layout on CAD
- Create an inverted plan view of the die
- Develop a front section assembly view of the working design
- Create detail component prints for a die design
- Detail non-purchased components by creating orthographic views as required
- Determine dimensions and tolerances required by each detail created
- Develop a stock material list that includes purchased and non-purchased components
- Determine die set and parallel requirements
- Prepare the design
- Manage the die design files on your designated computer storage
- Arrange the design views onto the following design pages
- Calculate the following and apply to the assembly view
- Create prints using CAD. Each sheet must be the appropriate scale and plotted on a standard sheet size. (A-D)
