MFG 261 - Milling Operations Lab Credits: 2 Lecture Hours: 0 Lab Hours: 4 Practicum Hours: 0 Work Experience: 0 Course Type: Voc/Tech An introductory-level course for the vertical mill. During this course, students will become familiar with basic setups as well as the safe operation and care of a milling machine in a lab environment. Corequisite: MFG 260 or Instructor Approval. Competencies
- Operate a vertical mill
- Perform daily maintenance requirements
- Setup the following accessories vise, strap clamps, angle plate
- Perform common operation procedures; square work piece, drilling, reaming, countersinking, counter boring,offset boring, tapping
- Orient spindle over a specific location
- Utilize edge finder
- Utilize use of center finder
- Utilize test indicator to sweep the head
- Evaluate tooling
- Identify commonly used cutting tools; fly cutter, end mill, insert cutter, form cutters
- Maintain all tooling and equipment (student or school property) in accordance with each individual manufacturer
- Perform milling cuts such as slot milling, side and end milling, face milling within required tolerance
- Evaluate what shop safety means
- Identify common shop hazards
- Demonstrate safety as it applies to common shop equipment.
