ITR 297 - Judiciary Translation Credits: 3 Lecture Hours: 3 Lab Hours: 0 Practicum Hours: 0 Work Experience: 0 Course Type: Open Advanced written translation training focusing on judiciary documents. Advanced lexicographical training in judiciary terminology. Intensive practice in translating the following types of judiciary documents: birth certificates, degrees and diplomas, plea agreements and wills. Prerequisite OR Corequisite: ITR 291 or instructor permission Competencies During this course, the student will be expected to:
- Identify judiciary documents in which translations should be performed: birth certificates, degrees and diplomas, plea agreements, contracts.
- Review principles of translation as applied to judiciary translation.
- Explain the levels on which meaning resides.
- Explain the freedom of translation continuum.
- Explain difference between the denotative meaning and the connotative meaning of a text.
- Identify false cognates in judiciary terminology and propose correct translations.
- Use appropriate resource materials to determine the best translation equivalents of judiciary terminology found in practice judiciary texts
- Determine whether terminology in question is already in student’s personal electronic glossary.
- Determine additional resources needed to locate correct terminology.
- Explore common translation problems as applied to judiciary texts.
- Define and identify transposition.
- Define and identify expansion.
- Define and identify modulation.
- Define and identify nominal and verbal modifiers.
- Define and identify double conjunctions in English.
- Identify 1 syntactic difference between English and student’s other language.
- Define lexical repetition and give 1 example from English judiciary texts.
- Demonstrate ability to translate birth certificates.
- Analyze birth certificates to extract specialized terms
- Incorporate terms relating to birth certificates in personal electronic glossary.
- Research terminological resources to find appropriate translations of terms relating to birth certificates
