HSV 812 - Pract: Chem Depend Counsel II Credits: 3 Lecture Hours: 0 Lab Hours: 0 Practicum Hours: 0 Work Experience: 12 Course Type: Open Supervised experience in one of these treatment programs for chemically dependent people: inpatient, outpatient, residential, adolescent dual diagnosis or family services. Prerequisite: Acceptance at an approved practicum site Competencies
- Observe chemical dependency counselors performing the following functions
- Conducting individual and group counseling sessions with chemically dependent clients and their families
- Assessing needs of CD clients and their families
- Developing treatment plans
- Evaluating outcomes of client treatment
- Interpreting client behaviors and information provided by the client
- Giving feedback to influence clients to enable them to understand and change their own behaviors
- Presenting educational material to large groups
- Read assessments, treatment plans, progress notes, social histories, discharge summaries, and referrals
- Perform the following counselor functions under close supervision
- Conduct individual and group counseling sessions with chemically dependent clients and their families
- Assess needs of CD clients and their families
- Develop treatment plans
- Evaluate outcomes of client treatment
- Interpret client behaviors and information provided by the client
- Give feedback to influence clients to enable them to understand and change their own behaviors
- Present educational material to large groups
- Write an assessment, treatment plan, progress notes, a social history, a discharge summary, and referrals
- Plan specific counselor functions independently
- Perform the following counselor functions independently under general supervision
- Conduct individual and group counseling sessions with chemically dependent clients and their families
- Assess needs of CD clients and their families
- Develop treatment plans
- Evaluate outcomes of client treatment.
- Interpret client behaviors and information provided by the client
- Give feedback to influence clients to enable them to understand and change their own behaviors
- Present educational material to large groups
- Write an assessment, a treatment plan, progress notes, a social history, a discharge summary, and referrals
- Exemplify professional behavior as specified in the Powell CDC or other facility and Iowa Board of Substance Abuse Counselor Certification code of Ethics and Confidentiality
- Demonstrate professional self-discipline
- Attend all scheduled work assignments
- Meet assigned deadlines
- Identify work that needs to be done at the work site and volunteer to do it
- Participate in all work activities in a meaningful way
