ECE 130 - Emergency Care

Cardio-pulmonary resuscitation and First Aid according to Iowa DHS requirements for child care providers. Identify health and safety practices for early childhood settings. CPR/First Aid and Universal Precautions certification awarded upon satisfactory completion of assignments. Course may be repeated for a maximum of 3 credits.
Competencies
  1. Define emergency care/first aid.
    1. List skills needed for the administration of emergency care
    2. Analyze emergency situations for immediate response and use of the EMS system.
  2. Express knowledge of protection given a rescuer by the Good Samaritan Law.
    1. Define actual and implied consent and know how consent applies in helping an adult in an emergency.
    2. Discuss consent as applied to helping a child in an emergency
  3. Evaluate an injured victim by use of a primary and secondary survey
    1. Use Basic Life Support (BLS) guidelines to correct airway, breathing and circulation problems discovered in the primary survey.
    2. Know when not to move a victim with serious injuries discovered in the secondary survey
  4. Identify signs and symptoms of respiratory emergencies and know how to respond
    1. Demonstrate procedure for rescue breathing for an adult, child and infant
    2. Demonstrate the correct procedures for relieving Foreign Body Airway Obstruction (FBAO) for an adult, child, and infant.
    3. Identify symptoms of asthma with appropriate management
    4. Identify symptoms of allergic reactions and demonstrate use of epinephrine pen.
  5. Demonstrate one rescuer CPR and use of the Automated External Defibrillator (AED) for an adult, child, and infant
    1. Describe the importance of AED in CPR
    2. Demonstrate safety skills when using AED
  6. Identify symptoms and management of common childhood illnesses and injuries due to medical, injury and environmental emergencies.
    1. Describe blood borne pathogens and demonstrate use of universal precautions when managing first aid emergencies.
    2. Demonstrate methods for controlling bleeding
    3. Identify signs and symptoms of shock and treatment.
    4. Identify signs and symptoms of fractures and treatment
    5. Describe first aid for poison emergencies.
    6. Describe first aid for burns.
    7. Describe first aid for heat and cold emergencies.
    8. Review methods for taking body temperature.
  7. Identify signs of child abuse and the role of the mandatory reporter.
    1. Verbalize the definition of child abuse as defined by Iowa Code.
    2. Identify physical, psychological, behavioral, environmental, and other relevant indicators of child abuse.
    3. Demonstrate requirements and procedures for reporting suspected cases of abuse: when, how, and to whom to report.
  8. Discuss how to set up a safe environment for children.
    1. Identify choking hazards.
    2. Identify appropriate sanitation and handwashing procedures in a child care setting.
