study of the tools and techniques necessary for entry-level visual arts in drawing. Emphasis on still life using gesture, contour, shape, plane, volume and value/tonal techniques. Basic drawing skills with pencil, charcoal and eraser are explored.
Competencies

Use gesture and contour techniques to create line drawings
Create drawings using positive shape and negative space principles
Render still life set ups using line to create shape, plane, and volume
Create a value scale using a variety of mediums.
Demonstrate how light affects form.
Create renderings with charcoal and eraser using toned-ground techniques
Select optimum types of charcoal, eraser, and paper surfaces for drawing techniques
Develop repetitive marks and patterns to achieve texture.
Utilize varying line width and line weight in order to create form and depth.
Demonstrate knowledge of linear perspective and foreshortening.
Identify the basic elements and principles of design and apply them in a composition.
Differentiate between successful and unsuccessful composition.
Critique artwork objectively, individually and in groups.
