MTR 121 - Medical Transcription II Credits: 3 Lecture Hours: 2 Lab Hours: 2 Practicum Hours: 0 Work Experience: 0 Course Type: Voc/Tech This course is a continuation of Medical Transcription I. Prerequisite: MTR 120 with a grade of C or better Competencies
- Recognize the role the medical transcriptionist plays in providing quality patient care.
- Review the importance of medical records in providing continuity of patient care
- Review the skills of a competent medical transcriptionist
- Operate designated equipment for medical transcription
- Review types of dictation equipment
- Review types of transcription equipment
- Demonstrate the ability to listen
- Clarify dictation which is unclear or incomplete
- Identify discrepancies and/or inaccuracies in medical dictation.
- Demonstrate the utilization of reference materials
- Use drug reference books
- Use medical/surgical word books
- Use medical abbreviation references
- Apply English, grammar, spelling, and punctuation rules as they pertain to medical reports.
- Prepare material containing numbers, symbols, and abbreviations.
- Review general technical/mechanical writing rules
- Utilize technical symbols and abbreviations for each specialty area.
- Transcribe realistic medical reports from five specialty areas.
- Transcribe the medical reports from cardiology.
- Transcribe the medical reports from internal medicine.
- Transcribe the medical reports from obstetrics/gynecology.
- Transcribe the medical reports from orthopedics
- Transcribe the medical reports from otorhinolaryngology.
- Transcribe history and physicals, discharge summaries, consultation reports, x-ray reports, and operative reports from physician dictation
- Translate medical dictation from originators with various dictation styles.
- Translate medical dictation from originators with various dialects and/or accents.
- Proofread transcribed documents
- Demonstrate the ability to mark own work for revision.
- Edit discrepancies and/or inconsistencies
- Flag medical reports requiring the attention of a supervisor or the dictator.
- Assemble a medical transcription notebook
- Balance quality requirements with quantity requirements.
- Produce medical reports that meet quality standards.
- Produce medical reports that meet productivity standards/deadlines.
