ELT 722 - Advanced Robotics

Sequel course of ELT 721 Robotics. Course includes advanced positioning control, measurements and integration of robotics into modern automation workcells.
Prerequisite: ELT 721  with a C or better or Instructor Approval.
Competencies
  1. Setup a machine vision system
    1. Know how to set up a camera
    2. Know what software is needed for robot vision systems.
    3. Know how to set up a teaching PC to a robot vision system.
    4. Understand 2D, 2.5D and 3D vision systems.
    5. Program a robotic task using vision for error proofing
  2. Interconnect Robotic system into workcell
    1. Discuss industrial communication protocols
    2. Discuss integration of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) Software and Robotic Workcells.
  3. Program a Human Machine Interface (HMI) into a Robotic Work Cell
    1. Diagram a complete automated workcell that uses a HMI interface.
    2. Examine HMI interface for minimizing human and machine errors in production.
    3. Demonstrate or simulate workcell production from HMI.
  4. Setup OSHA required guarding on Robotic Workcell.
    1. Discuss OSHA requirements for robotic and automated systems
    2. Measure stop time on an industrial machine.
    3. Calculate guarding requirements of an industrial machine base on stop time measurements.
  5. Calibrate Servo Feedback system
    1. Understand feedback systems in modern servo Control.
    2. Contrast position sensors types.
    3. Investigate Proportional, Integral, and Differential (PID) types of feedback.
    4. Tune a servo control system to maximize speed and minimize error.
  6. Setup a Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM)
    1. Discuss industrial standards of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing.
    2. Use Verisurf or similar coordinate measuring machine to measure complex shapes.
  7. Discuss Modern Flexible Manufacturing Systems
    1. Understand lean manufacturing principles in modern industry.
    2. Discuss quality control principles.
    3. Calculate return on investment (ROI) of an automated production system.
    4. Understand Statistical Process Control (SPC).
