VIN 250 - Wine Regions of the World

This course will investigate the grape varieties and wine styles produced throughout the world.
Prerequisite: VIN 150  or instructor permission
Competencies
  1. Identify significant wine growing regions of the world
    1. Compare quality classification grading systems between regions
    2. Review the common grape varieties produced in each region
    3. Discuss wine types and styles made in each region
    4. Introduce French, German, Italian, and Spanish diction
  2. Investigate Bordeaux
    1. Memorize the 5 first growth wineries
    2. Understand the 1855 Classification System
    3. Discuss primary grape varieties including Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Malbec, Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc and Muscadelle
    4. Examine significant sub-regions including Médoc, Haut Médoc, St.-Emilion, Pomerol, Lalande-de-Pomerol, Graves, Cérons, Sauternes, Barsac, and Entre-Deux-Mers
  3. Summarize the Burgundy region
    1. Discuss the sub-regions of Chablis, Côtes de Nuits, Côte de Beaune, Côte Chalonnaise, Mâconnais, and Beaujolais
    2. Memorize the Grand Crus of Chablis including Bougros, Blanchots, Les Clos, Grenouilles, Les Preuses, Valmur, and Vaudésir
    3. Memorize the 10 Crus of Beaujolais including Juliénas, St. Amour, Chénas, Moulin-a-Vent, Fleurie, Chiroubles, Moron, Régnie, Brouilly, and Côte de Brouilly
    4. Compare the villages of Marsannay, Gevrey-Chambertin, Morey-St. Denis, Chambolle-Musigny, Vougeot, Flagey-Echézeaux, Vosne-Romanée, Nuits-St. George, Aloxe-Corton, Beaune, Pommard, Puligny Montrachet, and Chassagne-Montrachet
  4. Investigate the wine growing regions of northern France
    1. Discuss the primary grape varieties utilized in Champagne
    2. Analyze wines produced in Alsace and Chablis
  5. Review the wines produced in the Loire Valley of France
    1. Describe the sub-regions of Pays Nantais, Anjou-Saumur, Touraine, and the Upper Loire
    2. Discuss important villages/communes including Muscadet, Savennières, Bourgueil, Vouvray, Reuilly/Quincy, Sancerre, and Menetou-Salon
    3. Evaluate the primary grape varieties including Muscadet, Cabernet Franc, Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc, Chasselas, and Gamay
  6. Analyze wines of the Rhone Valley
    1. Identify the important sub-regions including Côte Rôtie, Condrieu, St. Joseph, Hermitage, Côtes du Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Gigondas, Tavel, and Vacqueyras
    2. Review significant grape varieties including Syrah, Viognier, Marsanne, Rousanne, Mourvèdre, Cinsault, Counoise, and Grenache
  7. Investigate wines of Italy
    1. Review the classification system for Italian wines including Vino Da Tavola, Indicazione Geografica Tipica, Denominazione di Origine Controllata, Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita
    2. Discuss significant wine growing regions including Piedmont, Lombardia, Trentino Alto Adige, Emilia-Romagna, Veneto, Tuscany, Umbria, Latium, Sicily, Abruzzo, and Apulia
    3. Identify important DOCG’s including Asti, Barbaresco, Barolo, Moscato d’Asti, Franciacorta, Soave, Brunello do Montalcino, Chianti, Chianti Classico, and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano
  8. Analyze wines produced in Germany
    1. Evaluate wine quality classifications including Tafelwein, Landwein, Qualitätswein Bestimmter Anbaugebiete, and Qualitätswein mit Pradikat
    2. Identify the QbA regions including Mosel-Saar-Ruwer, Rheingau, Rheinhessen, Pfalz, Nahe, Mittelrhein, Franken, Hessische Bergstrasse, Ahr, Baden, Wurttemberg, Sachsen, and Salle-Unstrut
    3. Review common grape varietals including Riesling, Müller-Thurgau, Silvaner, Spätburgunder, Dornfelder, Weissburgunder, Grauburgunder, and Portugieser
  9. Discuss wines produced in Spain
    1. Differentiate the quality designations of Vino de Mesa, Vino Comarcal, Vino de la Tierra, Denominación de Origen, Denominación de Origen e Calificada
    2. Review quality designations referring to age including Crianza, Reserva, and Gran Reserva
    3. Identify the two DOCa regions of Rioja and Priorat
    4. Analyze the additional regions of Rías Baixas, Ribera Del Duero, Navarra, Tarragona (Penedes), La Mancha, Jumilla, and Jerez
  10. Review wines produced in the New World
    1. Discuss significant AVA’s in California including Napa, Sonoma, Mendocino, Los Carneros, Paso Robles, and Lodi
    2. Review significant AVA’s in North American including Willamette Valley, Columbia Valley, Umpqua Valley, Rogue Valley, Yakima Valley, Puget Sound, and Finger Lakes
    3. Analyze significant wine growing regions in the southern hemisphere including Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Chile, and Argentina
