This course is an introduction to the different methods of controlling vineyard pests, the different products available for pest control, developing a pest control program, proper pesticide application, safety concerns, and the rules and regulations involved with pesticide application. This course will help prepare students to take the test for a commercial pesticide applicator’s license. Prior to taking this course, students should have a basic understanding of vineyard establishment, management of mature vineyards and the life cycles of vineyard pests.

    1. Evaluate the role of the disease triangle: host, pathogen and environment.
    2. Explain impact of cultural practices.
    3. Identify natural predators.
    4. Define methods of mating disruption.
    5. Identify chemical controls.
    6. Evaluate risk associated with the methods of control
  2. Explain different types of pesticides.
    1. Differentiate protectants.
    2. Differentiate post infection products.
    3. Differentiate eradicants.
    4. Differentiate antisporulants
    5. Differentiate contact products.
    6. Differentiate systemic products.       
  3. Interpret pesticide labels.
    1. Identify target pests.
    2. Evaluate formulations.
    3. Determine safety intervals.
    4. Determine product specific storage, mixing and protective gear concerns.
  4. Calculate steps for correct pesticide applications.
    1. Investigate sprayer calibration.
    2. Calculate rates per application.
    3. Calculate rates per season.
    4. Outline proper steps to prepare the spray mixture.
  5. Recognize environmental, safety, and legal concerns with pesticides.
    1. Understand impact of drift.
    2. Identify beneficial insects.
    3. Relate aspects of human safety.
    4. Demonstrate record keeping requirements.
  6. Develop an integrated pest management program for a vineyard.
    1. Formulate base plan for the season.
    2. Investigate how to adapt based on weather and pest pressure.
