TEL 243 - Internetworking Lab

Provides hands-on lab experience configuring and troubleshooting networks. Internetworking is the primary focus using various software tools and test equipment to connect and analyze differing networks. Voiceover IP, ATM, xDSL, ISDN and other technologies are used and implemented in the lab setting.
Prerequisite: TEL 230 , TEL 233 .
Corequisite: TEL 240  
Competencies
  1. Install a fiber multiplexor
    1. Install and connect facilities to a fiber mux
    2. Troubleshoot and repair circuit and card failures
    3. Detail the benefits of broadband, high speed transmission facilities
    4. Demonstrate correct use of fiber power meters, otdr’s and associated optical test equipment
  2. Perform work operations on Intelligent Channel Banks
    1. Perform circuit grooming and maintenance
    2. Troubleshoot card failures and circuit troubles
    3. Demonstrate correct use of approved test sets
  3. Install a switched data circuit between two terminals using T carrier
    1. Connect one terminal directly to a line circuit
    2. Connect one terminal to a line circuit through T carrier
    3. Input data to assign terminals to DMS-10M
    4. Option the terminals
    5. Perform operational tests on the circuit 
  4. Perform trunk transmission tests using DMS-10M test lines
    1. Perform a station ringer test on a trunk or line
    2. Perform a 1000hz loss test on a trunk or line
    3. Perform a quiet termination test on a trunk or line
    4. Perform a loop around test on a line or trunk 
  5. Operate and maintain a fusion splicer
    1. Demonstrate proper safety and cleaning of a fusion splicer
    2. Perform fusion splices on fiber optic cable with minimal loss or signal degradation
    3. Measure and observe the affects of optical attenuation
  6. Use a DSX-1 patch panel
    1. Crossconnect T-1 outputs on the patch panel
    2. Electrically trace crossconnects on the patch panel
    3. Draw a basic block diagram for a DSX-1 patch panel
  7. Perform work operations on LANs
    1. Perform network management functions using approved networking software
    2. Install a workstation to a LAN
    3. Demonstrate file sharing between at least two networked computers
  8. Install and operate circuits to assigned broadband equipment
    1. Install xDSL facilities
    2. Install frame relay facilities
    3. Install DS1 facilities
    4. Demonstrate proper use of broadband test equipment
