TEL 223 - Telecom Transport Lab

Provides hands-on training on a private branch exchange system, user data modification for a digital central office switch, digital key systems, and associated equipment. Experience includes wiring, soldering, call routing, fault isolation and modular splicing.
Prerequisite: TEL 210 , TEL 213 .
Corequisite: TEL 220

  2. Splice outside plant cable
    1. Complete a 50 pair in-line splice using approved plant connectors
    2. Complete a 50 pair fold-back splice using approved plant connectors
    3. Describe quality and methods of procedure for completing copper splicing 
  3. Perform work operations on electronic key systems using system documentation
    1. Install electronic key systems
    2. Program electronic key systems
    3. Test electronic key systems
    4. Demonstrate how to operate electronic key systems
  4. Perform operations on electronic documentation systems
    1. Demonstrate use of electronic documentation software
    2. Demonstrate functionality of software in relation to switching platform
    3. Use software to find procedures for equipment maintenance
  5. Perform basic level trouble location on telecommunications circuits
    1. Measure metallic resistance and resistance to ground on cable pairs
    2. Measure T & R voltage and loop current on cable pairs
    3. Identify opens, shorts, ground, on subscribers line circuits
    4. Identify split cable pairs on a subscriber’s line circuit
  6. Perform basic level switch work operations using system documentation
    1. Identify the basic physical call path; MDF-PE-NTWK-PE-MDF
    2. Test lines using overlay TLT
    3. Add a trunk to a digital trunk group
    4. Test PEPK and PSHF equipment using overlays PED
    5. Test network shelf equipment using overlays NED, DED, and SED
    6. Test control shelf equipment using overlay CED
  7. Demonstrate digital test set use
    1. Test a T1 or higher circuit
    2. Perform circuit loop back tests
    3. Perform circuit testing with the aid of software
  8. Operate and maintain an approved telecom test set
    1. Describe and demonstrate proper use of test set
    2. Demonstrate functionality of test set
    3. Perform work operations with test set
  9. Demonstrate fiber cable operations
    1. Splice fiber cable with mechanical tools
    2. Splice fiber cable with fusion splicing tools
    3. Demonstrate proper safety and use of fiber optic test sets
