PSY 291 - Prin. of Behavior Modification Credits: 3 Lecture Hours: 3 Lab Hours: 0 Practicum Hours: 0 Work Experience: 0 Course Type: General The principles of learning theory with a major emphasis on operant conditioning will be studied. Emphasis will be on the practical application of these principles to the areas of mental health, mental retardation and education. Competencies
- Explain operant conditioning principles
- Define basic terminology of behaviorism
- Contrast behavioral schools: Methodological, Radical and Cognitive
- Analyze, behaviorally, responses and their controlling variables
- Use examples to identify the antecedent stimuli, responses and consequences operative in everyday experience
- Hypothesize as to the probable causes and maintenance of dysfunctional behavior from a behavioral perspective
- Discuss the behavioral impact individuals have on others
- Apply behavioral analysis to a better understanding of self
- Formulate Intervention Strategies
- Develop techniques for replacing aversive control (ie. punishment, negative reinforcement) with more positive alternatives.
