MTR 122 - Medical Transcription III Credits: 3 Lecture Hours: 2 Lab Hours: 2 Practicum Hours: 0 Work Experience: 0 Course Type: Voc/Tech A continuation of Medical Transcription II. Concentrates on transcription of case histories and physicals, discharge summaries and operative reports with a variety of dictating styles. Prerequisite: MTR 121 with a C or better Competencies
- Review the role the medical transcriptionist plays in providing quality patient care.
- Assess the importance of medical records in providing continuity of patient care.
- Rank the skills of a competent medical transcriptionist.
- Operate designated equipment for medical transcription.
- Interpret dictation to be transcribed
- Clarify medical dictation which is unclear or incomplete.
- Specify discrepancies and/or inaccuracies in medical dictation.
- Demonstrate the utilization of reference materials
- Use drug reference books
- Use medical/surgical word books
- Use medical abbreviation references
- Apply English, grammar, spelling, and punctuation rules as they pertain to medical reports
- Transcribe material containing numbers, symbols and abbreviations.
- Review general technical/mechanical writing rules.
- Transcribe realistic medical reports for five specialty areas. specialty area
- Transcribe reports from General Surgery/Pathology.
- Transcribe reports from Radiology/Nuclear Medicine
- Transcribe reports from Urology
- Transcribe reports from Psychiatry
- Transcribe reports from Dermatology
- Transcribe reports from miscellaneous specialties, i.c., Emergency Medicine, Oncology-Hematology, Rheumatology, Podiatry, and Ophthalmology.
- Transcribe history and physical, discharge summaries, consultation reports, x-ray reports, and operative reports from physician dictation
- Translate medical dictation from originators with various dictation styles.
- Translate medical dictation from originators with various dialects and/or accents.
- Proofread transcribed documents
- Proof one’s own work for revision
- Proof peers’ work for revision
- Edit discrepancies and/or inconsistencies
- Continue to assemble a medical transcription notebook
- Combine quality requirements with quantity requirements
- Produce medical reports that meet quality/accuracy standards
- Produce medical reports that meet productivity/character count standards and deadlines
