ESL 103 - Advanced Academic ESL Grammar

This is an advanced-level academic English grammar course for students whose first language is not English. This course emphasizes the usage of systematic functional grammar through the practice of studying the complex grammatical structures used in authentic academic settings integrated with writing skills. This course addresses the linguistic and instructional needs of non-native English speaking students. It may be taken concurrently with carefully selected college courses.
Prerequisite: 81 or above on ESL Test in ACCUPLACER

  1. Contrast the twelve verb tenses. 
    1. Understand and apply simple tenses
    2. Differentiate between usages of progressive tenses. 
    3. Demonstrate understanding and usage of perfect tenses. 
    4. Produce correct future tenses and forms. 
    5. Apply skills in editing for verb tenses. 
    6. Write a paragraph including a variety of tenses. 
  2. Develop skills in usage of adjective clauses. 
    1. Compare adjective clauses with subject relative pronouns and object relative pronouns. 
    2. Demonstrate proper placement of adjective clauses. 
    3. Be able to punctuate adjective clauses correctly.
    4. Show the ability to reduce adjective clauses and use them in oral and written rhetoric
    5. Compose a paragraph adding details with adjective clauses. 
  3. Develop Passive Voice constructions and use them actively
    1. Practice passives with modals in present, past and future tenses. 
    2. Use Passive to describe situations and report opinions.
    3. Use passive causative 
    4. Illustrate the impact of passive verbs on results of action in writing.
    5. Write a paragraph using different passive constructions 
  4. Differentiate between uses of real and unreal conditions in present, future and past. 
    1. Be able to use present and past unreal conditions.
    2. Demonstrate correct punctuation in sentences with if and result clauses. 
    3. Understand subjunctive and its usage

  5. Understand differences between direct and indirect speech. 
    1. Use correct punctuation with direct speech. 
    2. Make correct tense changes in indirect speech. 
    3. Select correct time phrases in indirect speech. 
    4. Practice question command formation using direct and indirect speech. 
    5. Examine differences in using direct versus embedded questions in casual and formal situations.
    6. Use correct punctuation with embedded questions.

    1. Distinguish between different types of adverb clauses
