ESL 097 - Intro to Writing Skills-ESL Credits: 3 Lecture Hours: 3 Lab Hours: 0 Practicum Hours: 0 Work Experience: 0 Course Type: Coll Prep This course introduces students to the mechanics of paragraph writing. It teaches rhetoric and sentence structure, using a step-by-step approach, high-interest model and varied practices. Students are guided through the writing process to produce well organized and adequately developed paragraphs and essays. Competencies
- Demonstrate knowledge of grammar and sentence structure.
- Define a sentence and identify various parts of speech within that framework.
- Identify complete and incomplete sentences.
- Practice converting incomplete sentences into complete ones.
- Analyze sentences for typical subject-verb agreement rules.
- Develop grammatically correct simple compound and complex sentences.
- Identify and use direct and indirect speech.
- Demonstrate knowledge of punctuation and spelling.
- Learn to use capital letter appropriately.
- Practice using commas correctly.
- Improve spelling skills.
- Practice time, space and rank order.
- Organize well-developed paragraphs.
- Demonstrate the ability to format the paragraph correctly.
- Follow four main steps of writing a paragraph: prewriting, organizing, writing and editing.
- Develop free writing skills.
- Apply transitions and connectors in writing.
- Distinguish between three parts of a paragraph: topic sentences, supporting sentences and concluding sentences.
- Be able to create effective topic and concluding sentences.
- Practice peer editing.
- Build up the content of the paragprah.
- Write a paragraph fitting the assignment.
- Make sure the paragraph is interesting to read.
- Learn to put care and thought into paragraph writing.
