This course introduces students to the mechanics of paragraph writing.  It teaches rhetoric and sentence structure, using a step-by-step approach, high-interest model and varied practices.  Students are guided through the writing process to produce well organized and adequately developed paragraphs and essays.
Competencies
  1. Demonstrate knowledge of grammar and sentence structure.
    1. Define a sentence and identify various parts of speech within that framework.
    2. Identify complete and incomplete sentences.
    3. Practice converting incomplete sentences into complete ones.
    4. Analyze sentences for typical subject-verb agreement rules.
    5. Develop grammatically correct simple compound and complex sentences.
    6. Identify and use direct and indirect speech.
  2. Demonstrate knowledge of punctuation and spelling.
    1. Learn to use capital letter appropriately.
    2. Practice using commas correctly.
    3. Improve spelling skills.
    4. Practice time, space and rank order.
  3. Organize well-developed paragraphs.
    1. Demonstrate the ability to format the paragraph correctly.
    2. Follow four main steps of writing a paragraph: prewriting, organizing, writing and editing.
    3. Develop free writing skills.
    4. Apply transitions and connectors in writing.
    5. Distinguish between three parts of a paragraph: topic sentences, supporting sentences and concluding sentences.
    6. Be able to create effective topic and concluding sentences.
    7. Practice peer editing.
  4. Build up the content of the paragprah.
    1. Write a paragraph fitting the assignment.
    2. Make sure the paragraph is interesting to read.
    3. Learn to put care and thought into paragraph writing.
    4. Provide appropriate word choice.
    5. Understand and apply the rules of unity and coherence.
  5. Move from writing a paragraph to writing an essay.
    1. Understand the structure of the essay.
    2. Learn to establish an effective thesis statement.
    3. Support thesis statement with details.
    4. Study how to write several types of essays.
  6. Get familiar with the use of Internet for academic purposes.
    1. Learn about different internet sources.
    2. Understand what plagiarism is.
