This course provides non-native speakers of English with intensive practices in advanced English grammar.
Prerequisite: Minimum scores on the TOEFL or Michigan Test
Competencies
  1. Demonstrate knowledge of present, past and future tenses.
    1. Distinguish between simple and progressive tenses.
    2. Use imperative correctly.
    3. Practice future time clauses.
    4. Formulate wh- questions.
    5. Identify the differences between the use of present perfect and present perfect continuous.
  2. Compare the use of modals and similar expressions.
    1. Distinguish between present/future modals expressing ability, permission, request, advice, suggestion, necessity, preferences, and expectations.
    2. Use present/future modals correctly in both written and oral speech.
  3. Identify gerunds and infinitives.
    1. Choose between a gerund and an infinitive after certain verbs.
    2. Review the use of gerunds after prepositions.
    3. Explain the use of infinitive of purpose.
    4. Use infinitives with too and enough.
  4. Explain the difference between the use of adjectives and adverbs.
    1. Express adjective comparisons with as and than.
    2. Give examples of superlative forms of adjectives.
    3. Name comparative and superlative forms of adverbs.
  5. Review the use of nouns and articles.
    1. Use proper, common, count and non-count nouns effectively.
    2. Select definite and indefinite articles correctly.
    3. Match quantifiers with count and non-count nouns.
  6. Use pronouns and phrasal verbs correctly.
    1. Identify reflexive and reciprocal pronouns.
    2. Use phrasal verbs appropriately.
