ELT 475 - Communications Systems Lab

Laboratory experiments in radio, television, satellite and microwave systems, including the construction and alignment of a broadcast radio receiver.
Prerequisite: ELT 387 , ELT 388 .
Corequisite: ELT 474  
Competencies
  1. Construct a portable cassette player from kit
    1. Perform required circuit tests 
  2. Construct an AM-FM receiver from kit
    1. Identify each section
    2. Tune each section
  3. Prepare a TV receiver for service
    1. Establish a safe and functional configuration with the screen and mirror.
    2. Connect the receiver to an isolation transformer
  4. Analyze the main stages in a TV receiver
    1. Identify the stages
    2. Measure the operating characteristics of each stage
  5. Setup a satellite receiver
    1. Install cabling
    2. Align the receiver
  6. Set up the baseline operating characteristics of the CRT
    1. Center the picture
    2. Level the raster
  7. Calibrate the CRT
    1. Adjust the brightness, contrast, color and tint controls for a proper picture
    2. Adjust the horizontal hold for maximum stability
    3. Adjust the vertical hold for maximum stability
    4. Adjust the vertical height and linearity for the proper raster
  8. Verify if HV is within tolerance as listed by the manufacturer
    1. Adjust for zero beam current
    2. Locate satisfactory ground for HV meter lead
    3. Connect HV probe to CRT second anode
    4. Measure high voltage
  9. Perform a final safety check on a TV receiver
    1. Check for RF leakage
