BCA 113 - Computer Network Literacy

This course is an introduction to basic concepts and terminology in computer networks and data communications. Topics include data communications equipment, media network basics and the Internet. Student will develop a personal web page.
Prerequisite: CSC 110  (or BCA 212  with instructor approval)
Competencies
  1. Define data communications
    1. Distinguish difference between data communications and telecommunications.
    2. Identify historical events that represent landmark events in data communications
    3. Describe the components of a communication system.
  2. Explain the terms applicable for computer communication.
    1. Match acronyms with correct definitions (BAUD, BIT, etc.).
    2. Describe the purpose of a modem.
    3. Distinguish between digital and analog signals.
  3. Identify the type of media available for communication and give examples of uses for each.
    1. List the most commonly used media.
    2. Show the advantages of one medium over another in terms of cost, speed, and data reliability.
    3. Differentiate between conducted media and radiated media.
  4. Describe the role of various types of computers in a communication network.
    1. Distinguish between different categories of computers (mainframes, minicomputers, personal computers).
    2. Describe how terminals are connected in a network configuration.
  5. Define commonly used terms when describing a network.
    1. Distinguish between LANs, WANs, and MANs and outline the functions of each.
    2. List and describe the topologies used in various networks.
    3. Defend one topology verses another.
    4. Identify popular network software.
    5. Distinguish between Taken Ring and Ethernet LAN configurations.
  6. Describe the Internet and how it works
    1. Discuss the history of the Internet
    2. Identify the addressing schemes used on the world wide web.
    3. List uses for and applications available on the Internet.
    4. Demonstrate ability to search for information on the world wide web.
    5. Show ability to create a basic personal web page.
  7. Utilize the world wide web and journals to explore modern day concepts and trends in technology.
    1. Investigate recent changes in technology.
    2. Describe issues that confront network managers (network security, availability, and user satisfaction).
    3. How do technology trends affect home and/or PC users.
    4. Compose a list of advantage and disadvantages to a token ring.
