This certificate prepares students for employment in health care environments where they would be expected to conduct biomedical equipment maintenance, repair, calibration and support.

Program Entry Requirements


  1. Complete an application for admission.
  2. Satisfy the assessment requirement.
  3. Attend any required information/registration session.
  4. Students should provide evidence of completion of the DMACC Electronics Fundamentals, Diploma   or a college degree (AAS, AS, Bachelor or higher) in Electronics.

Graduation Requirements


To earn a Bio-Medical Electronics Technology certificate, a student must complete all required coursework as prescribed and maintain a 2.0 grade point average.

What Kind of Work Will You Do?


  • Install, service and repair a wide variety of medical and non-medical electronics/electromechanical equipment. 
  • Graduates may work in a hospital, for medical equipment resellers, medical equipment manufacturers, as field service engineers for manufacturers or service companies.
  • Perform safety and preventive maintenance following company, manufacturers and accepted standards.
  • Maintain accurate equipment and service documentation according to company policy and accepted standards.
  • Evaluate equipment for suitability and serviceability.
  • Train staff and others on the proper user of equipment.
  • Interact with management, staff, coworkers and other trades.
  • Perform on-call duties as required.

What Skills and Abilities Will You Need?


  • Demonstrate knowledge of basic principles of electronics, physics, mathematics, computers, networking and a variety of equipment.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of basic anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, HIPPA regulations and safety protocols such as universal precautions.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of test equipment used for testing, calibrating, safety testing and maintaining medical and non-medical electronic equipment.
  • Apply knowledge to problems with the operation, installation, safety, maintenance, and repair of equipment used in a medical environment.
  • Demonstrate ability to understand technical manuals, reference material, and training classes to upgrade existing skills and learn new skills.
  • Communicate with mangers and staff regarding the safe operation, installation, and modification of medical electronic systems.

What Else Should I Consider about this Specialist Certificate?


  • Demonstrate the ability to be a “self-starter”.
  • Possess a strong personal commitment to succeed as a Biomedical Equipment Technician of Field Service Engineer.
  • Possess a desire to continue to update skills through self-training, vendor training, in-house training and/or coursework.
  • Salary: $15 to $22+ per hour.
